Life is a journey filled with joys and challenges, and it’s during difficult times that we often find ourselves searching for something greater than ourselves to lean on and ways to trust God during these moments. For many, that source of strength and comfort is their faith in God. Trusting God in difficult times can be a powerful way to find hope and resilience amidst adversity. In this blog post, we will explore the different ways we can trust God in tough times and draw wisdom from the Bible through various scriptures that offer guidance and inspiration.

 1. Acknowledging the Reality of Difficult Times

Before we dive into the depths of trusting God, it is essential to acknowledge the reality of difficult times. The Bible does not promise a life free from challenges, but it assures us that we can find solace and guidance through our faith in God. Psalm 34:17 reminds us,
“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”
“He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.” – Psalms 145:19
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” – Psalms 56:3
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalms 23:4
2. Surrendering Control and Finding Peace

One of the most challenging aspects of difficult times is the feeling of being out of control. However, the Bible encourages us to surrender our worries to God. Philippians 4:6-7 advises, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” When we trust God and we surrender all our struggles to God, knowing that He is in control, His plans for us are good, and all things work together for our good; it is at that point that we can start to experience God’s peace that passes all understandings. The kind of peace that only God can give.

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” – Matthew 6:25-26
 3. Strengthening Faith through Trials

Difficult times can test our faith but can also be an opportunity for spiritual growth. James 1:2-4 reminds us,
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” – Matthew 5:12
“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” – Hebrews12:11
Adversity is an inevitable part of the human experience but with God, and through His Words, we can find hope in times of adversity. God is compassionate and loving, and He has assures us that He will never leave us to face our trials alone.
4. Embracing God’s Timing

When facing challenging circumstances, we often seek immediate solutions. However, trusting God means embracing His timing, which may not align with our expectations. This does not mean that God will be late and neither does it mean that He will be too early. Nevertheless, God is always on time. Isaiah 55:8-9 emphasizes,
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
“But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD; they do not understand his plan, that he has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor.” – Micah 4:12
5. Finding Comfort in God’s Presence

During life’s storms and in moments of distress, finding comfort in God’s presence can be incredibly soothing, and can also be an anchor for our souls. In times of difficulty, when uncertainty looms and fear creeps in, trusting God might seem challenging. Yet, as we draw near to Him, we tap into an unshakable source of comfort and strength. The Bible reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When we immerse ourselves in His presence through prayer, worship, and meditating on His Word, we find assurance that He holds our circumstances in His capable hands. This intimate connection brings a deep trust, allowing us to navigate rough waters with unwavering faith, knowing He is with us every step of the way.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” – Psalm 46:1-2 NIV
Whenever I am faced with difficult situations that feel very overwhelming, turning to God is always my first go-to place. I find it very comforting and calming, knowing that I have a father who cares for me. Thereafter, I like to listen to some Gospel songs and meditate on God’s Word. God’s presence is always with us because God has promised never to leave us or forsake us.

“The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” – Proverbs 18:10
“May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.” – Psalms 20:1-2
“Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children, it will be a refuge.” – Proverbs 14:26

6. Trusting God’s Unfailing Love

God’s love for us is unconditional. Trusting God’s unfailing love during challenging moments can provide solace and strength. When life’s storms buffet us, remember that His love is unwavering and constant. Reflect on past trials where His love guided you through, providing resilience and growth. Maintain an open line of communication through prayer, and share your fears and hopes. Embrace patience, recognizing that difficulties often unveil opportunities for personal development. Surround yourself with a supportive community, drawing from their faith and encouragement. As you navigate adversity, cling to the assurance that God’s love transcends circumstances, offering comfort and a steady anchor amid life’s uncertainties. Through unwavering trust, His love will become a guiding light, illuminating your path ahead.

Though difficult times may cause us to question God’s love, the Bible assures us of His unwavering care and love. Romans 8:38-39 affirms,
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” – Jeremiah 31:3
“But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.” – Psalms 103:17
7. Seeking Wisdom and Guidance

As humans, we are no way near the level of wisdom of God. We already know how much the heavens are higher than the earth, and in that sense, so are God’s ways higher than our ways and His thoughts than ours. Thus, by entrusting God with everything in our lives, including any difficult situation we are finding ourselves in, we are surrendering everything to Him and telling Him – “I can’t; but I know you can.”Trusting God involves seeking His wisdom and guidance through prayer and reflection on His Word.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” – Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5 NIV
“The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” – Psalms 37:23-24 NIV
“If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us.” – Numbers 14:8 NIV

8. Learning from Biblical Examples

Throughout the Bible, we find stories of individuals who faced adversity and found strength in their faith.

  • The story of Joseph, who endured betrayal and slavery but later rose to prominence, exemplifies trusting God’s plan even in difficult circumstances.
  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, even in their position, chose to trust God and they had faith that God would save them and take care of them.
  • Naomi and Ruth – even amid so much heartache, tears, and agony, they trusted God.
  • Job – He had everything, family, wealth, and then he lost everything. However, Job never cursed God, as Satan thought he would. Instead, Job praised God’s name over and over again.
  • David – having gone through a lot and being tormented by the jealous King Saul, who chased him for many years to kill him. David eventually became a King – though he also struggled with his faith – and he ended every Psalm giving God praise.

When we look at these individuals – and a lot more – in the Bible, the biggest takeaway from these characters is that, though we may encounter difficulties, hard times, and challenges in our lives, all things are possible with God. Therefore, no matter what difficulties you are facing now, know that God is with you and He will get you through it. Find strength, comfort, and hope in knowing that God’s got you.

9. Building a Supportive Community

Embracing the journey of faith doesn’t mean going through it alone. God often uses fellow believers to offer support and encouragement. Building a supportive community can be instrumental in deepening our trust in God. As believers, we are called to bear one another’s burdens, offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and fervent prayers. In the warmth of genuine fellowship, doubts are eased, and hope is kindled.

Together, we share testimonies of God’s faithfulness, reminding us that He works in miraculous ways. Proverbs 27:17 tells us that “iron sharpens iron,” highlighting the growth that occurs within a united circle. By surrounding ourselves with fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord, we can cultivate an environment where trust in God flourishes during life’s challenges.

I like the way Hebrews 10:24-25 puts it,
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
10. Developing an Attitude of Gratitude

During trials, it may be challenging to find reasons to be grateful, but expressing gratitude can shift our perspective. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 reminds us to, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” There is a popular saying that: being grateful makes what we have sufficient. Getting more won’t make us happy either if we are not thankful for what god has provided us already.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:4-7
Conclusion

Trusting God in difficult times is a journey that requires faith, perseverance, and humility. As we encounter challenges in life, we can find comfort in the promises and wisdom found in God’s Word. By acknowledging the reality of difficult times, surrendering control, and finding peace in God’s presence, we can navigate life’s storms with courage and hope. May we draw inspiration from Biblical examples and stories of individuals who faced adversity and found strength in their faith, seek wisdom through prayer, and build a supportive community to strengthen our trust in God. Through faith and reliance on Him, we can find the strength and comfort we need to overcome any trial that comes our way. Remember, with God, nothing is impossible and there is no situation that is too difficult for Him.
